Holiday Travel Sleep Tips: What Should I Do If Travel Disrupts My Baby's Sleep?

Holiday Travel Sleep Tips

Traveling during the holidays is often inevitable. Between flights, car rides, and unfamiliar sleep environments, maintaining your baby’s sleep can feel overwhelming. Here’s how to manage sleep disruptions on the go:

1. Adjust Sleep Schedules Before Traveling

If you’re crossing time zones, gradually adjust your baby’s schedule a few days in advance. Shift bedtime and wake times by 15-30 minutes daily until they align with the destination’s time zone.

  • Tip 1: Use blackout curtains or travel shades to help regulate your baby’s sleep cycle during the adjustment period.

  • Tip 2: Pair the gradual schedule changes with familiar bedtime rituals, like reading the same story or singing a favorite lullaby.

2. Bring Sleep Comforts

Pack your baby’s favorite sleep items—such as their crib sheet, lovey, or sound machine—to recreate their usual sleep environment wherever you are staying. Familiar smells and sounds can provide a sense of security.

  • Tip 1: Wash your baby’s travel blanket or sheet with your home laundry detergent so it smells familiar and soothing.

  • Tip 2: Include a portable white noise machine to mask unfamiliar sounds and help maintain a consistent sleep environment.

3. Plan for Breaks

Long car rides or flights can make babies restless. Plan stops for stretching and short naps if driving, or try to align flights with your baby’s sleep schedule.

  • Tip 1: Plan extra time into your travel schedule for unplanned breaks if your baby becomes overstimulated or overtired.

  • Tip 2: Pack easy-to-access snacks and quiet toys to keep your baby content during stretches of awake time.

4. Be Patient with Adjustments

It may take a few days for your baby to settle into the new routine. Keep naps and bedtimes consistent during travel, and gradually reintroduce your home routine when you return.

  • Tip 1: Avoid making major schedule changes immediately after returning home; allow your baby to readjust gradually.

  • Tip 2: Offer extra cuddles and reassurance during bedtime to ease their transition and help them feel secure.
